Terminology

Color Rendering

A simple expression of the influence a light source has on the appearance of the color of an object.

Color Rendering Index (CRI)

It is a relative scale which measures the color shift that an object faces when it is enlightened by a light source. This scale is relative to the illumination of the same object by another color temperature or reference source which has a CRI of 100.

Color Temperature

It is a term specially assigned to the effect of heating that an object undergoes, which consists of radiation emission, the color changes which vary depending upon the temperature and the glowing effect. Hot metal in a forge is the perfect example which changes color from red, to orange and then finally white with the increase of temperature.

Cool White

It is a term assigned to a range of Color temperatures which are co-related.

Correlated Color Temperature (CCT)

The absolute temperature, defined in Kelvin of an object called blackbody which has a chromaticity most closely to its light source. The lower the temperature, the warmer the light will appear.

Diffuser

An object with an uneven or rough surface that causes reflection in all directions.

Driver

The electronic devices that provide illumination sources with their required energy sources.

Flux/ Luminous Flux

Luminous Flux is the degree of apparent power of light, which is adjusted according to the different sensitivity of a normal human eye to various wavelengths of light.

Kelvin Temperature

When an appearance of a color of a source of light is compared with theoretical blackbody the symbol and term (K) is used to indicate the comparison. 3000K is for yellow colored incandescent lamps while fluorescent sources of lights range from 3000K to 7500K, or may get even higher.

LED Chip (Chip)

A semiconductor device that produces light. There is a possibility that it may or may not be unified with an LED.

LED Driver

It is an electrical circuit that changes the power input into a source of current ¨C a type of sources whose current remains persistent whether there is a voltage fluctuation or not. LED drivers are useful as they protect LEDs from voltage spikes, excess voltage and its fluctuation.

LED Light Engine

It is an assembly of integrated form that is made up of LED driver, LED arrays or LEDs, and other components such as thermal, electrical, mechanical and optical ones.

Luminous Efficiency

The total amount of lamp lumens emitted by a lighting fixture, luminaire or system excluding the wasted light in percentage is called luminous efficiency.

Power Factor

It is the numeric value obtained after dividing active power with apparent power. (In other terms, product of RMS input voltage and RMS input current of the driver)

Volt

It is a term that is used to explain the potential difference between oppositely charged conductor. A negative and positive side of a AAA battery has a potential difference of 1.5 V.

Warm White

An explanation that has a temperature between 3000K to 3500K and has slightly yellow color.

Watt

It is the unit of electrical power which is consumed by any electrical device for its proper functioning. Several lamps have their own specified rating for maximum functioning.
